We have recently uplifted a gymnasium floor which has been slightly water damaged. The material is sedcondhand 22mm thick Junckers beech and once laid would require a sand and seal. The flooring does not required to be denailed. We have approximately 200m2 @ £5/m2 for sale. This product bought new, costs over £40/m2 !!

Floor trend predictions 2009
Here are our predictions as to what we think will be the flooring trends in the UK in 2009.
Parquet wood block designs :- we have noticed an increase in the use of traditional wood block flooring in herringbone, double herringbone, basketweave and ladder patterns. Wood block flooring features heavily in our new showroom design as we think it offers customers that 'something a little bit different' to the typical strip wood flooring. Although wood block is an exclusive product it is now available in more species than the traditional oak block flooring that was popular in stately homes throughout Europe in the past 2 centuries. We can install maple, beech, wenge and teak battens (and other species) in a myriad of designs. Once laid the parquet floor is sanded and can be finished in ultra matt, matt or gloss lacquers or oils. We are one of a few companies that offer this full service to the highest of standards in the UK. As home owners, architects and interior designers become aware of the more intricate designs that we can achieve with wood block flooring, we anticipate a greater demand for this service throughout next year.
Although engineered flooring is already a popular alternative to solid wood floors we envisage that the increased number of multilayer boards being introduced to the market will continue this trend into 2009. Some of the exciting products that we will be introducing are engineered elm and also a semi solid sycamore floor. The trend in recent years has seen 3-strip boards being replaced by single plank engineered boards. This trend will continue with species like oak but in a variety of finishes, stains and effects. We have noticed in the last few years that the improved stability of engineered boards is ideal for the changing Scottish climate. We think that the more stable performance will see increased use of multilayer wooden floors in 2009.
We are really excited about the numerous possibilities when combining different flooring products such as wood and granite. The permutations when laying a combination floor are endless - we can frame large granite tiles with wood flooring forming a lattice effect or lay a granite floor with wood inserts or vice versa. The contrast between the polished granite finish and warm wood tones works really well and is open to creative licence.
We have covered granite flooring in previous posts and would just reaffirm our belief that 2009 will be the year when granite floors become more mainstream in the UK.
Leather flooring in a click system - we think this flooring will be a surprise hit in 2009 for customers looking for something unique. This is a new product that is easy to install, is made from recycled leather and has a 25 year guarantee. Watch this space!!

Apologies for disruption
On Friday we will be moving our office staff and phones to our new premises at 123 Harmony Row, Govan, Glasgow. For those who have been to our existing premises in Govan - we are moving 50 metres across the road. As from Monday our office staff will be working from our new premises. However our showroom personnel shall be remaining at 8 Harmony Square for approximately 1 week. Our phone numbers will remain the same but will probably be out of commission on Friday afternoon. Our Glasgow showroom will be closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to allow us to move office furniture etc. It will reopen for business as normal on Monday 3rd November. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time. Our Livingston showroom will be open as normal during this period.

Always nice to get a mention in the newspaper. In today's Sunday Mail Justin & Colin recommend McKay Flooring for wood floors.
To achieve this retro look, we used a graphic paper, Hick's Hexagon from Cole and Son - www.cole-and-son.com - after checking the room was square so that the lines wouldn't appear to run off at the ceiling.
We kept everything else quite plain to provide a contrast and definition.
REMODEL & RELOVE
The most environmentally friendly thing you can do is reuse old goods rather than throw them away.
The boudoir set was a horrible colour but we reupholstered it in pink and painted the frame gold.
Gold buttons transformed it from dowdy dowager to dandy duchess.
CLEAR WINNERS
To stop the room looking like a Keira Knightley lite drawing room, we mixed styles and added a few modern touches.

The room was lightened up with a quality blond timber floor. It is hardwearing and well worth the money as it will last for years. It will also add value to your home.

THINK PINK
Pink is a much misunderstood colour but you don't have to be Jordan or Barbara Cartland to have a pink house. These days you can be young and modern and male and still be in the pink. Pink is now seen as a masculine colour with London shirtmakers Moss producing more pink shirts than white ones for city types and even the Marylebone Cricket Club experimenting with pink instead of white balls.

We would advise customers who are keen to get their flooring installed before Christmas to place their orders as soon as possible due to our work's diary filling up quickly. The run up to the Christmas holidays is traditionally a very busy time and we would recommend that customers wishing for a wood floor to be fitted before Xmas place their order as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Linlithgow Academy wood flooring
McKay Flooring won the contract to supply and install the wood sports floor package to Linlithgow Academy for Graham Construction. The specification called for a Junckers Sylvasport premium floor laid on to a Unobatt 50 undercarriage system. As the floor would accommodate a bleacher seating system we had to adjust the batten spacing to support the additional load. Our in-house indoor court markings team then marked out, taped and painted the sports court markings using Granpaint. On this particular contract we applied an additional coat of Junckers lacquer to add extra protection to the lines. Within the floor we routered and fitted Junckers sports bushings so that sports equipment such as badminton net stands can be plugged into their sockets. More photos at

Junckers Floor Finishes

Learn more about Granite Granite is a very hard, crystalline, igneous rock primarily composed of feldspar, quartz, orthoclase or microcline accompanied by one or more dark minerals. It is visibly homogeneous in texture. It is the most common plutonic rock of the Earth's crust, forming by the cooling of magma (silicate melt) at depth. The term "Granite" is derived from the Latin word "Granum" meaning "grain" because of its granular nature. Italian granito, from past participle of granire to granulate, to make grainy, from grano, grain. Granite is the hardest building stone and occupies a prominent place among dimensional stones on account of its hardness, resistance to weathering, capability to take mirror polish, fascinating colours and textural patterns. The principal characteristics of dimensional granite also include high load bearing capacity, crushing strength, abrasive strength, amenability to cutting and shaping without secondary flaws, ability to yield thin and large slabs and - above all - durability. Due to its dense grain it is impervious to stain. Polished granite slabs and tiles have achieved a special status as building stones world over. Granite is used as a building material in the form of granite tiles and granite slabs for wall cladding, roofing and flooring and a variety of other interior and exterior applications and especially for counter tops, kitchen work tops and vanity units and is the most popular material for monuments and memorials.
Shortlist RIAS Andrew Doolan Bset Building in Scotland Award
The shortlist for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award has been announced today. A total of 11 projects have been selected for the UK's richest architectural prize. Wood Flooring Repairs
One of the key services we provide is a wood flooring repair service. We can fix broken boards, remove scratches and stains, sand out water damaged and capped boards and can add further expansion to the perimeter of your floor. If your floor squeaks when walked upon then this may be resolved by uplifting and relaying.

Case Study - wood flooring to stairs
McKay Flooring were approached by a client in Stewarton, Ayrshire who required wood flooring installed throughout a ground floor hall, an upstairs hall and on a staircase. The stairs would link the Clyde solid oak flooring on the ground floor to the upstairs hall floor. The client chose a solid oak wood floor on the lower hall area combined with a natural stone finish. The stone was surrounded by an oak chaser board mitred at the corners to give a classic finish. Our professional craftsman installed the solid oak to the stair treads and risers with a contrasting Jatoba nosing. The upper hall was laid with the same oak strip flooring with a butt joint to accommodate the change in direction of the L shaped hall. The client was delighted with the work and has since had more McKay wood flooring installed in their house.

INVERNESS CANCER CARE CENTRE IS BEST BUILDING IN SCOTLAND
The Inverness Maggie's Cancer Care Centre
The RIAS has announced the winner of the 2006 Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland.
Designed by Page\Park Architects of Glasgow, Maggie's Cancer Care Centre in Inverness was selected from a shortlist of ten projects to receive the accolade of best building in Scotland this year.
The prize of £25,000 is the biggest architecture prize in Europe and is awarded annually in memory of Scottish architect Andrew Doolan, who founded the award in 2002.
At a ceremony in The Balmoral Hotel, Professor Simon Unwin of Dundee University School of Architecture, speaking on behalf of the jury, said the architects had tackled a delicate brief with disarming wit and comforting good humour.
He said: "With a complex tangle of intertwining curves and using a palette of warm and pliable materials, the interior meets uncertainty with companionship and reassurance. Cosy sitting places huddle by hearths among the irregular geometry. A veranda in the sun looks out into a landscape of grass mounds ascended by long spiral pathways. This is a 'home' distorted by worry. It is also a refuge where cancer sufferers can find support and maybe come to terms with their disease.
"Architecturally, it is a 'tour de force'. It is a successful and poetic collaboration of architecture and landscape design, and brings bright and exciting relief to the adjacent hospital buildings with their usual utilitarian dullness. This is a building that speaks of aspiration and healing, and in doing so it speaks also of humanity."

DOUBLE AWARD FOR HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE
The double award winning theatre
An Aberdeen landmark has landed two major architectural prizes, following an ambitious extension and refurbishment.
His Majesty's Theatre on Rosemount Viaduct was a joint winner in the major project category of the Civic Building of the Year competition. The £8m extension and refurbishment to the Edwardian theatre shares the Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities (SCALA) award with Norwich Bus Station.
The glass and granite extension, designed by Aberdeen City Council principal architect Trevor Smith and built by Robertson Construction Eastern Ltd (RCEL), was also given a commendation at the National Civic Trust Awards and short-listed for a Saltire Society Civil Engineering Award.
The redevelopment of HM Theatre took two years to complete with 700 tradesmen working on the project, many of whom previously worked on the upgrade of the building which took place in the 1980s.
The construction work within the original building encompassed major alterations to the stage, lighting and sound, building new bars, kitchen and restaurant areas and toilets all incorporating disabled access with the addition of lifts. The new extension has a rehearsal area, green room, modern dressing rooms and office and reception areas.
Many original features of the building have been kept like ceiling decoration, cornices, gold leaf work in the auditorium and seats, which have been refurbished rather than replaced.
Managing Director of RCEL, George Wood, said: "It's fantastic that the building has collected two such prestigious prizes. It was particularly pleasing to win the SCALA award, considering that the project faced competition from 127 local authority projects throughout the UK.
"The development will place His Majesty's Theatre in an ideal position to continue bringing first-class productions to Aberdeen. And w! e are pr oud that we have been able to put our stamp on yet another prestigious project, which is a landmark building in Aberdeen and an important building for Scotland as a whole."

The Euparal is an international association of parquet importers and / or distributors.
Euparal was founded by a group of four companies: ChethamTimber (Ireland), Hardvidarval (Iceland), Promoketa (Spain) and Woodpecker (Holland). This group foresaw in 1989 the need of international exchange between parquet importers and distributors. Originally the association focused on Europe and started with four members. In 2005 there are 14 members, 13 in Europe and 1 in Canada. Since the association was incorporated in the Netherlands it is governed by Dutch law.

Clyde Lapacho is a deep rich walnut with finely textured, multi-directional wood graining. It has far greater hardness values than American Walnut (Lapacho is one of the hardest timbers known!) resulting in a very hardwearing timber than is more suited to heavy traffic areas and more versatile than American Walnut.
CLYDELAPACHO - Brazilian Walunt also has the economic advantage of retailing for less than traditional Walnut.

Never use sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors. Self polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and appear dull quickly. The only remedy in this situation is to sand and refinish the floor.

Place mats and throw rugs at doorway exteriors and interiors to help prevent the tracking of grit, dirt and sand.

Never wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discolouring residue.

Wipe up food and other spills immediately with a slightly dampened towel.

Do not over-wax a wood floor. If the floor dulls, try buffing instead. Avoid wax build-up under furniture and other light traffic areas by applying wax in these spots every other waxing session.

Put soft plastic or fabric-faced glides under the legs of furniture to prevent scuffing and scratching.

Remember that cleats, sports shoes and high heels can dent any floor surface. When a 125 pound woman takes a step in high heels she exerts 2,000 psi (pounds per square inch). An exposed heel nail can exert up to 8,000 psi.

When moving heavy furniture, completely pick up the furniture and carry rather than slide to best protect the wood flooring.

Use a humidifier in the home throughout the winter months to keep all wood movement and shrinkage to a minimum.
