Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira built this fantastic tree trunk art installation at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art as part of his Decay Of City Life Exhibition that ran throughout 2011
The artist uses tree trunks that are splitting and dying (worn by time and weather), in order to highlight the unseen forces that contribute to the decay of city life. The materials are collected by Oliveira on the streets of his native São Paulo. The sheets of bark and wood are curled around a PVC pipe skeleton. The overall result is that of trees bursting out of walls and wrapping around pillars, an impressive and dynamic sight.
